Governors

Drake and Morice Town Primary Academies Local Governing Body

In February 2019 , the local governing bodies of Morice Town and Drake Primary schools  decided to merge into a single governing body. They saw this as a positive move and a way of building on the partnerships being developed between the schools. This will provide an opportunity for the strengths of each governing body to come together for the benefit of all the pupils. We have ceased the notion of committees and adopted a timetable of full governor meetings every 6 weeks where each governor can contribute to all areas of governance.

Chair of Governor Statement

Welcome from Drake and Morice Town Governing Body. We work with the schools to ensure that they provide the best for your child, both academically and pastorally. We meet regularly to provide an independent oversight of the school and how it is run. The school is required to report to us on things such as, management and planning as well as results and we act as ‘critical friends’ and a sounding board. We help to set the budget, analyse SAT’s data and provide an independent panel in issues relating to staffing or pupil exclusions.

We are made up of members of the school staff, parents and independent people, who all bring different skills and knowledge to the board. All the governors are volunteers and do not receive any payment for their role.  We all serve for 4 years when we can be re-elected. Although this is a voluntary, part time role all governors strive to show commitment and the passion for the schools that is required in the role.

What we do:

Drake and Morice Town governors provide support and advice to the Senior Leadership Teams as well as monitoring the school's achievements and challenging decisions.

We provide:

* Overview and scrutiny of the management of the academies;

* Policy development for the academies where this has been delegated to us from the Trust; scrutiny of policy compliance by the academies where policy is set by the Trustees;

* Championship of the academies and its leaders;

* Engagement with the parents of pupils and the wider community.

We do this by:

* Holding 6 weekly meetings to discuss the schools, their achievements and areas of need, the policies and

* Visiting the schools and observing lessons and the schools in action.

* Talking to the pupils, parents, and staff to find out their views.

* Attending training to extend our skills and knowledge.

Who are your governors?

  • Janice Carr

    Chair of Governors

    Term: 01.04.17 - 31.03.21
    Responsibility: English, Safeguarding and LAC
    Attendance 2019-20: 2/2
Registered Interests: Trustee of Peter Pan Playgroup

I joined the Governing body in 2009 when my eldest son was in Foundation and have been Chair for the past 8 years. I am a supply teacher and find this background understanding of education has greatly helped in my role. I have 2 more sons who have either been at Drake or are currently here. I have volunteered in the classroom at Drake which gave me an insight into the teaching side of the school and bring this to the governors meetings. I enjoy my role and am pleased we have added Morice Town to our governing body. This is a new challenge for us but it has been exciting meeting the new staff and joining their journey. I look forward to continuing to work across both schools to achieve success for all our children.

  • Susie Carroll

    Head of School

    Term: 01.04.17 - 21.03.21
    Responsibility: n/a
    Attendance 2019-20: 1/2
    Registered Interests: None

In addition to being a teaching deputy head at Drake Primary and now head of school, I have been a governor at Drake for 19 years. In my new role, I am enjoying the challenge of improving outcomes for our pupils across both schools. I continue to enjoy getting in the classroom to support teaching and learning, particularly in Year 6. My strength as a governor is analysing school data and articulating this to fellow governors.

  • Pauline Donnellon

    Safeguarding and Welfare Lead

    Term: 11.02.19 – 10.02.23
    Attendance 2019-20: 2/2
    Registered Interests: None

I have been employed at Morice Town Primary School since 1997. In that time, I have worked across the whole school gaining a wealth of knowledge and understanding of the hopes, desires and the needs of the families of our school. I was previously a Governor for 21 years, having a short break in 2016 until recently. I stepped into the role of Safeguarding Lead in the same year that I stepped down from the role of Governor. I was able to focus clearly on the level of support the children and families needed and I feel privileged to now be working across two amazing schools.
I am passionate about our schools, not only in my role, but also as a school Governor and member of SLT. I want each and every child to reach their full potential, feel confident, safe and to be happy in their school environment.

  • Hayley Evans

    Responsibility: Maths
    Attendance 2019-20: 0/2
    Registered Interests: tbc

I’m in my 40s and have lived in Morice Town for over 5 years now with my husband and our twins. I’ve been connected to the school since the twins joined the nursery at 3. They are now in year 3 and absolutely love the school. I wanted to get involved more because I truly believe that every child should have the education they deserve.

I would say my passion would be my best asset to bring to the role of governor.

  • Karen Moyse

    Parent Governor

    Term: 13.05.19 - 14.05.23
    Responsibility: English
    Attendance: 2019-20: 2/2
    Registered Interests: None

I have a primary school aged daughter, which led me to become interested in Teaching Assistant support work. As a result, I have been in training since the beginning of 2018.
I believe in delivering education with passion and patience. As a new Parent Governor, I welcome engagement across the board, including with parent's, pupil's and the wider community, effectively in this role.

  • Joe Roberts

    Executive Headteacher

    Term: 01.01.18 -
    Responsibility: n/a
    Attendance 2019-20: 2/2
    Registered Interests: None

I have been teaching for nearly 30 years in six different Plymouth primary schools. I was appointed headteacher of Drake Primary in 2010 and the executive Headteacher of both Drake and Morice Town in 2018. I consider it a huge privilege to work with the pupils, staff, families and communities of both schools.

  • Andrea Roe

    Vice-Chair - Parent Governor

    Term: 07.12.17 - 06.12.21
Responsibility: Maths, Statutory Grants, Pupil and PE Premium
    Attendance 2019-20: 2/2
Registered Interests: Owner of Wool Dragon Crafts

I took up the role of parent Governor in January 2017 but have had experience with governance groups within the work place. My daughter started with the reception intake this year but had previously been part of the nursery. I saw how much passion and dedication was shown by the staff towards the children. It was this introduction to the school which made me want to help make Morice Town a great school. I firmly believe that the right environment and support can build a life-long passion for learning.

After finishing my degree at Plymouth, I started working for the biggest mobile telecommunications company in the UK within their customer service department where I moved into a management role which I have been doing for the last 10 years. During this time, I’ve gained many skills and insights which I can bring to the role of governor.

  • Mr Dene Terry

    Parent Governor

    Term: 01.04.17 – 31.03.21
    Responsibility: SEND & Inclusion
    Attendance 2019-20: 0/2
    Registered Interests: None

Currently I have two children attending the school, Paige year 6 and Tommy year 2, but I have had a parent relationship with Drake Primary for 24 years!!
My role as parent governor is backed up with experience from working in a special school, so have a very good understanding of school data, policies and procedures. So, I’m able to ask probing questions to ensure all our children are receiving a full and varied education, but also able to progress at an appropriate level. Having seen Drake Primary grow in the last 24 years I have to say we are lucky to have such a supportive and understanding SLT team and staff to help our children in their early tender years of school life.
