What is the Sports Premium?
The government continues to provide substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is jointly provided by the Department for Education, Health and Culture and Media and Sport. The money goes directly to primary school headteachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and P.E; each school will receiving £16 000 plus an extra £10 per pupil each year for the next two years - here at Drake that will mean £17 750 a year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.
Purpose of the funding
Schools will spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. At Drake Primary Academy, we recognise that PE makes a positive contribution to health, well-being, attitude and achievement. With this in mind, this year’s funding has been spent in the following way:
The school continues to buy into the Plymouth School Sports Partnership, who offers us advice, coaching support, involvement in festivals and training. In addition to whole school training, many classes have received fun and engaging input from our link teacher. This, in turn, helps develop the skills of our teachers.
Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
Whole staff REAL PE training has improved the quality of teaching and learning across the school. The aim of this new approach is to improve pupils’ core movement skills and improve their opportunities for taking part in healthy competition. The resources allow staff to plan and deliver motivating lessons.
In addition to the curriculum opportunities, 90 pupils have received Bikeability and Balanceability training- this supports our Personal, Social, Health Education curriculum.
The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
Alongside the curriculum development of REAL PE, the school ran a Family FUNS club for six weeks. This saw six families taking part in engaging activities in school. These families also received a resources packed for use at home. We are pleased to say that we achieved a 100% attendance record for the duration of the course.
Quality resources were purchased so that children can access their two hours of high quality PE.
Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.
During the academic year, pupils in both key stages were able to take part in a range of after school clubs. Adults other than teachers deliver many of these successful clubs.
Increased participation in competitive sport
The school continues to access many of the city-wide festivals and events, to enable pupils to compete.
Other uses of the funding
The St Levan’s MOD facility is still hired so that the school continues to hold its successful sports day for key stage 1 and 2.
This provision is constantly being reviewed and monitored by our leadership team and governors, to ensure the expenditure benefits all children.

Swimming Provision (2020)

Schools can choose to use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to provide additional provision for swimming but this must be for activity over and above the national curriculum requirements. Have you used it in this way? No, due to COVID-19.
